Souled American [Night 1]

  • Judson & Moore 3057 North Rockwell Street Chicago, IL, 60618 United States (map)

Doors at 7:00pm, show at 8:00pm

An original influence on the alt-country explosion in Chicago, Souled American’s legacy has had a lasting effect on musicians and fans alike. The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle penned an essay about how Souled American's Flubber changed his life and Eric D Johnson (aka Fruit Bats) recalled a show at the Empty Bottle where Jim O’Rourke opening for them was just a side note:

“Souled American took the stage and it was immediately awesome – it was based in folk and country tradition but was heavily drenched in a spooky, hazed-out weirdo vibe. Singular alien music.”

Though the group released six records over their lifetime, it’s the last two, Notes Campfire and Frozen that have made a recent resurgence including this in-depth review by NPR last year. These albums are after the band lost their drummer and seemed to slow way down, uninhibited by the annoyance of someone keeping time in the band.

The group is getting back together to perform two nights at Judson & Moore to celebrate the reissue of these two albums by Scissortail Records (Tobacco City, Rosali). Tickets for reserved seating and general admission are on sale now!
